Montepulciano and the Vino Nobile

A Full Immersion in One of the Best Red Wines of Tuscany

Would you like to have a full immersion in one of the best red wines of Tuscany? Here we go!

Let's spend the day strolling around the old town and the countryside of Montepulciano: vineyards and wineries, tasting the best Vino Nobile at some of my favorite little family-run places. Meet the owner, learn the secrets of wine making, visit the ageing cave and the cellar, enjoy the fields and the grape vines, and finally a fantastic wine tasting with a view! Private tour (just you and me), customized day and the best authentic local wines!

Montepulciano: A Hill Town That Takes Your Breath Away

Perched at 600 metres above sea level in the heart of Tuscany, Montepulciano is one of the most stunning Renaissance hill towns in all of Italy. As we walk through its ancient cobbled streets in the morning light, we pass elegant palaces, tiny artisan shops, centuries-old stone wells and little family-run bars where locals stop for their morning espresso. The views from the top of the town are simply spectacular — rolling hills, long rows of cypress trees, and vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see across the Val di Chiana and the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. It is the kind of place that slows you down. And that is exactly what we are here to do.

Into the Vineyards — Where the Vino Nobile is Born

After exploring the town, we head out into the countryside. Walking among the grape vines in the open fields of Montepulciano, you begin to understand why this wine is so extraordinary. The soil here is unique: a carefully balanced mix of clay, sand and limestone that gives the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano its signature depth, complexity and elegance. We enjoy the fields together, breathe in the Tuscan air, and talk about the grapes, the seasons, the patience that goes into every bottle. This is wine country at its most authentic — no filters, no performance, just the land and its story.

Did you know? Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was one of the first wines in Italy to receive DOCG status, back in 1980. It is produced primarily from Prugnolo Gentile, a local clone of Sangiovese, and must be aged for a minimum of two years — at least one of which in large Slavonian oak barrels. A Riserva requires three years of ageing. This is a wine with history, character and soul.

Meet the Owner — Learn the Secrets of Wine Making

This is the heart of the day. We visit some of my favorite small, family-run wineries in Montepulciano — the kind of places that never appear in mainstream travel guides, where the owner opens the door themselves, pours you a glass and sits down to talk. You hear about their grandfather who planted these very vines, the difficult harvests, the years they are proud of, the choices they made that changed everything. No gift shop. No rehearsed tour. No crowd. Just a table, a few extraordinary bottles and a real conversation about what it truly means to make wine in Tuscany.

Visit the Ageing Cave and the Cellar

We go down into the ageing cave and the cellar — cool, dark, silent rooms carved deep into the tufa rock beneath the winery. Here the Vino Nobile rests in large Slavonian oak barrels, slowly developing its character over months and years. The smell of wood and wine, the quiet, the rows of barrels disappearing into the darkness: it is an experience that stays with you long after the day is over. This is where patience becomes wine.

A Fantastic Wine Tasting With a View

We close the day with a fantastic wine tasting with a view. We sit outside, with the hills of Tuscany all around us turning golden in the late afternoon light, and we taste: a Rosso di Montepulciano, a Vino Nobile, and — if the stars align — a beautiful Riserva. Paired with local charcuterie, aged pecorino and Tuscan bread. We take our time. We talk about what is in the glass. We enjoy the moment. Because this is not just a wine tasting — this is the best possible way to end a day in Tuscany.

This is a private tour — just you and me. Every detail is built around you: your pace, your curiosity, your taste. No buses, no groups, no fixed itinerary. Just the most authentic experience of Montepulciano and its Vino Nobile that you will find anywhere.
